Feature of the Week: Reading for Spiritual Benefit

Reading of scriptures and spiritual work should not be undertaken with a view to criticize the author or attempting to know the logical explanation behind every word said and the incident depicted. This is because the realization of God cannot be explained by logic or analysis but by strong faith and a constant yearning. Shri Sai Satcharitha is a boundless treasury of wisdom and Sai devotees undertake reading of this holy book all over the world. While it is a practice to perform a saptah (complete the reading in one week), it is also said that Shri Sai Satcharitha reaps enormous spiritual benefit if read on a regular basis every day. Shri B. Hanumantha Rao, the author of "Sri Sai Anusaranamu" in Telugu, wrote, "while reading a holy book, it is not appropriate to question the qualifications of the author or the way its contents are presented. It is important to pay attention to what is said regardless of who said it. It is important to realize the truth in the sayings rather than attempting to apply one’s rationale to the narration. The message of God is timeless and the way it is delivered and perceived varies from individual to individual. What is needed of a reader is the realization that he is the benefactor of riches that humans cannot fathom". This would automatically make a reader obedient and impart the humility necessary for spiritual growth.

Experiences of Devotees

Ashutosh Jaiswal, India
Dear Sai Devotees, I am a regular reader of this newsletter and I wish to share my experiences with the readers of this newsletter and would request them to guide me/pray for me. I have been a devotee of Sri Sai Baba since about 15 - 16 years. I have had many wonderful experiences which cannot be described so easily. Just to mention a few: I had taken a humble "chadar" for Baba to Shirdi in 1995. I gave it to the temple Manager to be adorned on Baba for Arti. In the evening, I was truly shocked to see it in the Sansthan's sale shop, without being offered to Baba. I almost fought with the concerned staff of the Sansthan regarding this and also with Baba. I was promised the same would be on Baba for the Shejarti. However, this did not happen and I was in tears...how could Baba not accept an humble gift from a devotee who had brought it with so much love and care? I could hardly sleep the whole night & I was very hurt & disturbed. Next morning, for the Kakadarti, when the Mandir was opened, I had the shock of my life. BABA WAS WEARING THE "CHADAR" BROUGHT BY ME!! How did the humble gift make it's way from the shop to Baba & that too after the Shejarti, when he is put off to sleep and the Chadar is changed only after the Mangalsnan, was simply beyond my understanding! Four years back I was facing some problems with my job and I was told by my astrologer to perform Puja to Lord Shiva. I was in two minds...I didn't want to disturb my daily Puja to Baba and my astrologer wanted me to do it daily to Lord Shiva. I was in doubt....that night, Baba gave me very clear darshan. AS LORD SHIVA in my dream. This happened the next day too and then I started regular Puja. I wish I could describe what I saw in my dream!!

However, for the past two and a half years, I am facing situations and experiences which have almost convinced me that our Baba has abandoned me. He doesn't care for me anymore. All my efforts, hard work, worships, prayers etc. are going unanswered and wasted. I am without work since that time and whatever I do, in any field of life, ends up as a waste. He does exactly the opposite of whatever I try or pray for, so much so that now I've started praying for something adverse to happen to me with a hope that He will do the opposite and as a result, something good will happen to me. I am virtually living and sleeping on tablets. I am not sure if I could say " it could have been worse". Right now the situation that I am in, forces me to say " it could NOT have been worse". My sincere hard work and efforts, my prayers, my tears are all falling on deaf ears. There is nobody with whom I could share all this and so, I am writing in here. Please, Please do pray for me and guide me...may be He listens to all or one of you. May He bless you all. Sairam.
