Mahalsapthy, the blessed priest of Khandoba mandir is the closest devotee of Sadguru Sainath. He spent the best part of his life serving Baba and spending the time with Baba. Once a well to do devotee of Baba offered Mahalsapathy some money. But Baba prevented Mahalsapthy from taking the sum.

"Question of the week" for this week is

Why did Sai Baba prevent Mahalsapathy, His impoverished humble servant, from receiving the sum?

Humbly yours,

The Editor

Feature of the Week: Living Sadguru

When faith wavers, the mind goes after a tangible physical experience. It becomes very necessary to long for His presence in our lives, His assurances for our well-being. It is natural. It is important to rely on our patience at such instances. “I shall speak from my tomb”, said Sadguru Sainath. There are also certain type of followers who need a grander vision of the Lord. They prefer to see Him in the most physical state. Having lost the patience to realize that Sadguru is the embodiment of the spirit that can be realized anywhere, anytime, they bring upon themselves unnecessary burdens. This is not a good sign of spiritual progress. However, even great realized souls have gone through this stage. But, just like any intense quest is answered, Guru leads such souls to the answer in the most unseeming way. Let us see one such experience narrated by Acharya Bharadwaja in his, “Sree Guru Charitha”:

Once I visited Sri Ma Anandamayi at Naimisharanya during Bhagavat Saptah. At one of the daily expositions of the holy text, the revered speaker Sri Akhandananda Saraswathi remarked that only a living Sadguru could lead his devotee to self-realization and that a Sadguru who had cast off his body, however great he might be, can only fulfil prayers for one’s material good. He spoke in Hindi which I could only understand but cannot speak and so I could not discuss with him. As Sai Baba was no longer available to me in flesh and blood, I wondered what I should do, but had no chance to get the clarification.

After a few months, I visited Shirdi on a proposed stay of seven days. I wished to obtain Sai Baba’s guidance and clarification in this matter. On the second day, I was very strongly impelled to visit my old student who was working in Pune. It was quite unusual as I never visited anyone of my friends or kinsfolk. I had to yield to the impulse and I reached Pune. My friend was away at the office. So I left my bag in his house and wet out, wishing to spend the time in going round the city till my friend’s return. Quite accidentally, I enquired at a wayside florist whether there was any great saint worth visiting in Pune. The shop-keeper directed me to visit Sree Gulavani Maharaj, a direct disciple of Sree Vasudevananda Saraswathi.

As soon as I entered the Muth (monastery), the aged saint greeted me saying, “Oh! The child of Sai Baba has come!”. I at once realized that I could get a reliable clarification for my problem from him. He heard my question and said, “What that learned speaker said is true of only those who attained enlightenment through their efforts. But Sai Baba of Shirdi is not such one. He is the Avatar of Lord Dattatreya. He manifests himself to his worthy devotees even today in his physical form and guides them. You are on the right track. Go ahead”. At once I realized that Sai Baba had blessed me with the solution to my question.

Contributed Article : The process of Breath Chant
by Balkrishna Panday, NOIDA, New Delhi, INDIA. kirti89@aol.com

For the faithless time is as valuable as for the faithful. Needful it is to state in the beginning that the following is the essence of the Truth expressed from times immemorial therefore our friends who have minds closed to FAITH may save their time from the benefits of the following:

OM is the primordial sound pronounced as in AUM, all syllables prolonged to a fair length of breathing time. 'A', the letter's briefest possible sound is the mother of all spoken word and it symbolizes TRUTH (i.e. 'Satta'). ' U' symbolizes the mind-intelligence ('Chitta') 'M' symbolizes the ultimate of happiness (i.e. Ananda). So let us utter the holy sound of AUM.... This is the sound of rotating universe. SAI is the holy name given to a very revered Saint of 19/20th century, the SAI BABA OF SHIRDI who attracted devotees to their own FAITH quite often by supernatural miracles. He possessed supra -natural powers of such dimensions as have ever been known to mankind. His physical remains were laid to rest in 1918. His devotees visit his shrine in very large numbers and are blessed by him via his memorials/temples and direct devotion to him which further sanctifies each one's OWN FAITH. His following is absolutely secular though' widespread amongst Hindus in particular, yet very many people of other religions too. Chanting his name as one's master or 'guru' brings one closer to one's personal recognition of ALMIGHTY along with material and spiritual benefits. The two most important conditions are faith in his name SAI i.e. 'Shradha' and patience i.e. 'Saburi'.

RAM (pronounced Raam) though' Hindu incarnation of God - king in mythological era, the word 's chanting of Raam, Raam , Raam signifies getting in contact with the ultimate source of time, space and energy i.e. Superconsciousness personified beyond all the senses.

Very important to understand that to this humble writer GOD, MY LORD, CHRIST, ALLAH, YHWH (Hebrew) BUDDHA and all the names of remembering HIM are the calls of this soul('Atman') contained in the body to get in touch with the SUPREME ('Paramatman') and to remain with him and ultimately be in HIM. This write-up is intended to share with you a simple practice, which when conducted willfully with as much concentration as one may command, in an atmosphere of humility equal to prostration with folded hands at the feet of one's spiritual master, is bound to bring one closer to happiness, peace and tranquility(i.e. 'Ananda').

OM .....SAI .....RAM to the mind of this writer is a magical combination of representation of symbols which has been practiced and experimented with to prove to oneself as a provider of what you look forward to from your LORD master of all worldly masters. This principle is known in 'Sanskrit' language as a 'Mantra'. For the benefit of devotees from different faiths/religions this writer would suggest , should you so desire, please bring forth from your own scriptures or from the depth of your cultural background, a combination of at the most 3 or 4 or 5 words. The test is that they should rhyme into smooth devotional music when chanted or repeated inwardly or outwardly and the time taken should equal one cycle of breath i.e. breathe in and breathe out. This writer shall be very obliged if such holy combination of words is intimated through e-mail, as is picked up for devotional practice. Just consider if the word SAI can be a prefix or a suffix anywhere within such a formation of words; which is solely dependent on your choice. This writer can simply vouch for the efficacy of the name SAI by virtue of personal knowledge.

INDUCTION
The intention is to describe a method to practice your spiritual phrase or MANTRA. Before we do this, let us know or revise the eternal truths of life and spirit. This writer has to fall back upon the thought process emanating from personally selected poetic rhymes in SANSKRIT (i.e. 'Shlokas') from an ancient Hindu scripture ' Srimad Bagvatgeeta' known the world over as Geeta in short. I am sure that all the major religions known to the stress-prone modern society have duly stated identical principles in their own scriptures. So please, while you read the following, recall or find the similar cardinal principles from the resource of your own Holy Scriptures. Hereunder the 'Shloka' number has been stated after the Chapter number of The Geeta alongside the first few Sanskrit words for the reader who would like to study the Holy Scripture.

Please take care, the process of understanding and alignment with the SUPREME ( ' SAIRAM' to this writer: you bow your head to the NAME of your reverence ) begins right away.

Statement -I.
This body is temporary, transitory and it does not represent the whole of myself. 'I' am the soul, the spirit, the consciousness (i.e. 'Atman') within, which is permanent, eternal, has been, is and would remain irrespective of the concept of time. Let us drop this TIME dimension for the present till we wish to shift from Meditation mode to the worldly work mode. Just as a human being discards old garments and wears new ones thereafter, similarly the master of this body i.e. the soul-spirit departs from the existing or old body and dons a new one. The soul cannot be cut with a sword, fire cannot burn it, water can't damage it and air cannot dry this individual unit of the SUPREME. The destructive power of the elements is in vain vis-a-vis the soul-spirit. She (since IT is in perpetual continuum like motherhood) is neither born nor ever dies and having once come to exist can never be referred to as one passed away into the past. ('Na jayate mriyate'.....,Ref: The Geeta Ch.2/20-23)

Statement - II
The knowledge of relativity of the body to the soul-spirit is the last frontier of knowledge that is eternal; this when realized is the core of all knowledge. When Nobel-prize winning scientists and litterateurs say that beyond their achievements they try to understand the intent of God, they point to the aforesaid frontier of knowledge. For this knowledge to be achieved, imbibe The Commandments of the scriptures for uplifting of our intellect. Effect of this knowledge in terms of worldly performance by the body has to be by way of benefit to the world at large e.g. one's wealth shall remain here when the body is gone. Can we achieve a state of equanimity of mind in conditions of gain/loss? Let us try. ('Adhyatma gyan nityattvam'.....,Ref: The Geeta Ch.13/11)

Statement - III
So, what does one do? Renounce the world for a jungle and/or become a mendicant. NO. One conducts oneself not with a sense of deep involvement with the results(i.e. good/bad, gain/loss kind of duality) but for the ethics of duty and perfection of the process, while remaining very much a man of the world. Just shed the baser and demeaning elements of WANT and the high profile egoistic sense of ME and MINE. Be a witness and play your role in the world real good; the peace of mind shall be yours. ('Vihaya kamanyah'.....,Ref: The Geeta Ch.2/71)

Statement IV
It is imperative to share with the noble reader that following is an injunction by Lord Krishna to the warrior king Arjuna in the Geeta. In case so desired , the readers may follow a similar command from their own holy resources. Center your mind in ME, become MY devotee, worship ME inclusive of the attitude that all your work in this world is an offering to ME and thus bow in humility to ME. In this manner dissolve yourself in the SUPREME soul - spirit of all the universe that is known and unknown. Practice this 'YOGA'(the spiritual science of '+', i.e. the summum bonum of all knowledge) and the peace of mind shall be yours. ('Manmana bhav madbhakto'....., Ref: the Geeta Ch.9/34)

Statement V
PEACE, tranquility, calmness of a placid sea. How do we retain it ? It is a state of mind and it does not rest with outside objects of the world. Remember, whatever we amass, collect and create anew, physical or intellectual is for the general good of the global network of human beings, simply because this body - shop called 'ME' is to down its shutters one fine day. Happiness lies within oneself, it is an inherent quality of one's soul-spirit , and it is purely subjective. Having done our duty, let us visualize or rather experience our soul-spirit, let us aim inward to find our joys within our consciousness. We must realize the light that glows within us to dispel the darkness of ignorance and illuminates a haven of rendezvous, of being blessed by the LORD. There is no other superior destiny of a human being. ('Yo antah sukho'....., Ref: The Geeta Ch.5/24)

PRAYER before the process:
'Om bhur bhuvah swaha
tat-savitur varenyam,
bhargo-devasya dhi mahih,
dhiyo-yonah prachodayat'

(This is in Sanskrit; English and Hindi translations follow)
AUM… Oh my LORD, as in the breath of my life, my savior from all ills, omnipresent, happiness incarnate, YOU who is omniscient and the origin and GOD of all universe, with full reverence I see you in my mind's eye as the SUN that dispels sins and illumines our consciousness and intellect. Oh my FATHER ,accept my prayer that my conscience may not go astray from you as also, may the light of your blessings enlighten my deeds. ('Hey praan- swaroop, dukh - harta, sarva - vyapak anand ke denewale Prabho(SAI) jo aap sarvagya or sakal jagat ke utpadak hain, main aapke us pujniyatam paap - nashak swaroop tej ka dhyaan karata hoon, jo hamari budhiyon ko prakashit karata hai. Hey Pujya Pita (SAI), aapse meri budhi kadaapi vimukh na ho aur aap sada meri budhi main prakashit rahein. (Suggested addition by the writer) Mujhe shri - charanon ki sharan mein lain aur shri - charanon ki bhakti pradaan karein. Aisi prarthana hai, aisi prarthana hai, aisi prarthana hai. OM SAI RAM') (continued...…)

Devotees Say

Susan
Bless you for this website. God is ever answering our needs and fulfilling us. The following is my weekend prayer I would like to share: As the weekend begins this Friday evening I am ever aware of God's Grace and Blessings. I affirm that God is forever expressing Love and Abundance through people, places and things, but it is not people, places and things that are the Source - they are the expression of Source. I am reminded of this especially at this time as my mother moves into assisted living and I hold the intention for her that all of her needs are met - that this is the true nature of Abundance and its responsibility, not mine or hers or the facility's. People and places and thing's only responsibility is to be a channel for God's Perfect Plan. I am aware of this Truth and embrace it fully. Therefore, I am totally confident in letting go and letting God appear as the Abundant All-Sufficiency in my life and affairs and in my mother's life and affairs.

Rebecca
I must say that I found the quotation from the book about Baba, "The beef eating Moslems could have overpowered the little goldsmith with one whiff form their mouths," rather disturbing in its tone. I was sorry to see such a sentiment down in black and white. Can somebody comment?

Buddy Singh, Toronto, Canada
This small letter is for Sai Devotee Ashutosh Jaiswal, India. I am a "recent" devotee of our Beloved Sainath. I do not know enough to give you any advice, but I felt the pain, confusion and the second guessing of yourself, when I read your letter. This type of frustration as a result of a number of unhappy events, leads to exactly what you are thinking and expressing. This I know very well. Perhaps you may want to inject yourself with a dose of "So life is getting tougher, It does not matter how difficult and bleak it becomes, I am alive, I will be tested, I will survive, Baba is awake and seeing me, I don't, no, I would not let my lord see me buckle under a test of my faith in him. Sainath & Lord Shiva are one. Remember my dear devotee, gold has to burn to melt out the other elements, we all burn karma to advance our soles to merge with Baba someday. Every apparent setback, is only an opportunity to get closer to our Param Atma. Never forget your miracles. I wish you and all my Sai brothers and sisters, Sainath's grace.

A Sai devotee
It must be really depressing to get the feeling that even God has forsaken us. I do not claim to have any great words of cheer, or even anything which you would not have heard already - that God may test us but will never forsake us, that bad times are there for our own growth and to make us stronger. Perhaps these tough periods happen in order to make us practice the wisdom embodied in the verse "Karmanyevaadhikaraste maa phaleshu kadachana..." (literally, "You have a right only to action, not to the result of the action"). We start feeling that God has forsaken us when we expect a Him to provide a particular result and that doesn't happen. By facing adversity, we learn to turn this attitude around; we learn to work and pray for our goals while at the same time trusting in God to do whatever is good for us. And I have seen this in my life again and again: the ultimate result has always been beneficial whenever I have acted with full faith in God, leaving the outcome of my goal to Him. I don’t claim that my faith was or is unshakeable, not by a long way. I also go through periods of doubt. But always, when I look back at bad times in perspective, I can see the obvious - that God is wiser than me. I wish you strength to face the vicissitudes of life.

I need your good wishes and Sai's blessings to accept the sudden changes in my life. My future seems so uncertain to me. Please pray that my marital life improves. I believe that whatever SAI does will be for good.

I am a physically handicapped person with my right leg wasted due to Infantile Paralysis (Polio) during my second year of my birth. I had however managed to do the normal duties irrespective of the handicap and retired from the services of Life Insurance Corporation of India as a Superintendent . After my retirement at the age of 60 in the year 1995, the strength of my right leg is going down day by day and the doctors had advised me to pull on with the defect as there is no medicine. With the help of prayers, I am able to attend to the normal work within the four walls of my house with some assistance from my wife. I feel that as the days roll on, I should not be big burden to her as she herself is a patient of BP and other allied diseases. Before I become a 100% dependant on my wife for anything and everything, I pray that I should reach the lotus feet of the LORD. I request all the Sai brethren for their support to my prayer. svsbala@md2.vsnl.net.in

I have a niece who is 18 years old and studying in class 12. For the past one year she has been unwell with some health problem or the other. While she has overcome most of the problems the one that lingers on is chronic fatigue and weakness so much so that she can hardly do anything continuously even for an hour or so. We have shown to almost all the doctors in Chennai including Apollo and the Physician to the President of India . All tests starting from blood to MRI to Bone marrow have been done and everything is normal. None of the doctors have been able to cure her or even diagnose her problem till date, except for one who calls it Chronic fatigue syndrome which I don't agree to it as most of the symptoms of the same ,which I gather from the internet, are not the same as what my niece has . The span of specialists we have seen include, general physicians, Blood disorder experts, Neurologists, Psychiatrist, Dermatologists, heart specialists etc. Besides this we have been to a number of sadhus and saints including Bhuvaneswari swamigal of Chennai and performed yagas as desired by them many times. We have actually run out of ideas except my deep and unyielding faith in Baba to whom I continue to pray and seek relief for my niece. Through this prayer club I request all devotees to pray for my niece for her early recovery and resumption of studies, which has got disrupted. Also if there are any doctor devotees, please give us some advice on what we should do medically . Lastly may I ask Mrs. Veena Gupta (I think she is the lady who receives vibhudi from Baba’s photo at her home regularly) to send some of the Vibuthi ,which I consider the MOTHER OF ALL MEDICINES for my niece (the address to which it maybe sent is V.RAJA c/o N.SRINIVASAN , H 20 GREEN PARK EXTENSION,FIRST FLOOR, NEW DELHI 110016) .

Experiences of Devotees

D. Sankaraiah, Hyderabad, India E-mail:sainama@yahoo.com
INCREDIBLE BLESSINGS OF NAGADEVATHAS(TIRUVANNAMALAI)

Devotees of Lord Sainath are aware that Saibaba appeared as cobra at Coimbatore, India, and received pujas/milk at the present site of Saibaba mandir. Hence it is called Naga Sai mandir. On August 22, 2000 at 5 PM two large cobras (female and male) of 10 1/2 ' size appeared in H.H.Seshadri swamigal Ashram, Changan road, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. It appears that on August 20, 2000, peacocks came to the Ashram and danced. The employees of the ashram informed the authorities about the appearance of cobras. This news spread like wild fire in Tiruvannamalai town. Press and TV crew took photos and published in local newspapers (August 23, 2000). SAIBABA APPEARED AS COBRA

A Zoologist who saw confirmed both belong to same class or type of snakes. Generally, snakes if seen when united will hunt and kill any person. In the present case they never cared for the flash lights or noise of hundreds of persons. This was explained to me by Shri.Muthukumar Swamy, Secretary of the ashram on August 29, 2000 in connection with arrangements for proposed Akhanda Sainama Sankeerthana on 24-29, September 2000. Brahmasri Saint Umadevi ammier who was in the ashram in deep meditation saw what was happening from 5PM to 7-30PM. She could see the nagas were half in human form and the other half in snake form. The female wore a yellow saree whereas the male in devatha dress. She was told as the place is more sanctified they appeared in that form and danced for the welfare of humanity. They can appear anywhere and at any time at will. They will speak to her also in future. After 7-30pm they left the spot.

The secretary further explained that thousands of years ago there was a five headed cobra and its progeny is still live there. When special poojas/yogas are performed they appear and go (in different sizes).H.H.Seshadri swamigal instructed the secretary to install naga idol for blessing visiting devotees. It was done. It is called KalaNaga (beyond time). Devotees visiting Tiruvannamalai may visit the ashram and enjoy divine vibrations. We are grateful to Shirdi Sainath for showing such a holy place for conducting non-stop sainama[OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAI] on September 24-25, 2000. "Jai Bolo Sadguru Seshadri Swamigal" "Jai Bolo Sadguru Naga Sainathaya".

Question of the Week

"How does Sai philosophy differ from organized religions?"

Sai Pattabhiram, UAE
I was going through' the Sai Vichar of Thursday 10/6 . Something prompted me skip various sections & arrive at your question for this week mentioned above , I feel the need to share an incident which occurred on 13/7/2000 ( Thursday ) while I was in the process of transacting my business with a client in the middle east this incident effectively sums up Sai philosophy . For a Sai devotee like me the day on which I was taught this lesson being a Thursday is very significant.

It was around 5.00 PM local time on 13/7( Thursday) when I reached the offices of a very potential client. I was hoping to finalize a major contract which would enhance my career prospects very significantly. Hence all could well imagine me to be in a very materialistic frame of mind. I was introduced to the owner of the company. His attire & looks was that of a muttawa (Arabic word for maulvi or a kind of a priest) . His appearance & the surroundings of his office showed his deep faith in Islam & its teachings . Over all he was a very humble & pious personality in many ways reminding me of Baba himself.

After having discussed the various aspects of the business & finalizing the contract for double the figure originally discussed we got down to small talk. As a general comment I asked this gentleman a customary question "In your opinion do you see an improvement in the market conditions? " His reply was, " It is our duty to put in our best effort in transacting our business as for results and the future " Allah mallik ( Baba' s favorite phrase )".

It was at that time that a thought occurred to me here is this gentleman a pious devout Muslim steeped in the teachings of Islam all his life saying " do your karma leave the rest to the almighty or the supreme being " Is this any different from the teachings of my " Gita " being a Hindu or the words of my Sadguru " Sai Ram"?

Hence I came to the conclusion religion is a system by which thoughts are conditioned since birth . But if you dig below the conditioned surface of these systems you will find the same river of truth flowing . The eternal truth told by the muttawa & my thoughts / conclusions in my opinion are the essence of Sai philosophy . For me it was like a message from Baba himself.

I do not agree with the framing of the question of the week as in my opinion Sai philosophy encompasses all religions and by trying to find the differences vis a vis organized religions we are implying , a) the philosophy to be a separate religion, and b) Sai philosophy is not organized . Baba himself was never trying to create a separate religion . He in fact by his worship and teachings encouraged people of differing faiths to pray together "in a way he was trying to merge the people of so called organized religions " the Urs and Ramanavami celebrations are cases to this end.

In my opinion the question should have been " what is Sai philosophy and how does it encompass various organized religions in its teachings?

I have stated my opinion above & accept that there could surly be opinions vastly different from mine . I also accept that I might have not understood the question & its intention properly but have stated my humble opinion for your consideration. In relating my experience I have attempted to share a lesson taught to me by Baba in a very normal day to day situation . I attribute this lesson to Baba as I feel it is he who infuses thoughts into the minds of mortals such as us. I hope my attempt above would serve the purpose of setting a few minds thinking.
