GuruPoornima is a festival revered by many Sai devotees. This is a
festival Baba has Himself asked his followers to observe. This is one
such event in the year where Sadguru is celebrated and His existence in
our lives glorified. This is a celebration Sai centers all over the
world, might observe. Please share with Sai Vichaar about GuruPoornima
activities planned in your area. Refer to Sai Activities section for the
message on GuruPoornima 2002 celebrations by Shirdi Sai Satsang in Twin
Cities, Minnesota, USA, and Saidarbar, Canberra, Australia.
For the "Question of the week" a devotee wrote to Sai Vichaar as
follows: "Baba foretold the dangers awaiting His devotees, and saved
Balasaheb Mirikar and Bapusaheb Booty from being bitten to death by
snakes. In the case of Amir Shakkar, He helped in discovering a snake
near Amir's bed, and finally, the snake was killed in His presence(vide
Ch:21, Sri Sai Satcharita). However, later, Baba Himself expresses the
view that whether snakes or scorpions, one must desist from simply
Killing them, as they can do no harm as long as God did not Will them to
do so. Can anyone explain this contradiction?"
Humbly Yours,

Feature of the week:
The Narrow Footpath near Barvi Well!
When the merciful father is the wrath incarnate, it will be for a
purpose. When Sapatnekar sought Baba after losing his only son to throat
disease, Baba tested him for a long time before giving him the best
comfort of his life, His Company! Had Sapatnekar known earlier about the
omniscience of Baba, perhaps he would not have belittled his friend's
faith in Baba during his younger days. When Haji Siddiq Falke, proud of
his pilgrimage to Mecca did not recognize the Supreme in Baba, he was
made to realize his mistakes soon. Completely grounded by Baba's
impossible questions, Haji opened his eyes, realized his misconceptions
about his own spiritual experiences and was enlisted in Sai's darbar.
Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari said, "When intelligence matures and lodges
securely in the mind, it becomes wisdom. When wisdom is integrated with
life and sprouts in action, it becomes bhakthi. Knowledge when it
becomes fully mature is bhakthi. If it doesn't get transformed into
bhakthi, such knowledge is useless tinsel. To believe that knowledge and
bhakthi are different from each other is ignorance". Bhakthi or devotion
is the ultimate and perhaps the only means of realizing Baba completely.
Thus, when knowledge leads to wisdom, the wisdom must lead to devotion.
Mere assimilation of facts is purposeless unless they are used to
realize the truth, by Sadguru's grace. The intellects of Sapatnekar and
the spiritual superiority of Haji were mere collection of facts and once
they realized the wisdom of truth by Baba's grace, their transformation
was swift and complete.
Sustaining faith in Sadguru, nurturing the thoughts of surrendering to
Sadguru, and fostering devotion as the utmost virtue to realize Sadguru
is a challenge amidst pursuit of knowledge and the intellect. The narrow
footpath near Barvi well that Baba wanted Haji to tread refers to the
same challenge Logic, synthesis and analysis, may help one in securing
the knowledge but it is the devotion that helps one truthfully realize
Sadguru in all His magnificence.

Das Ganu Maharaj started his career as an ordinary constable in Police
department and gradually rose to the level of Police Inspector with the
help of Baba. No one could under-estimate the work of Das Ganu Maharaj
as he was instrumental in spreading Sai Baba's divine glory to all parts
of Maharashtra state with his keertans. His work had been recognized by
Baba Himself and appointed him permanently to perform Keertans in Shirdi
during Ramanavami festival. Once, Das Ganu thought that, he should go to
Prayag for a holy Tirth bath and came to Baba to get His permission for
doing so. Baba replied to him, "It is not necessary to go so far. Our
Prayag is here, beleive Me!" Then, wonder of wonders! When Das Ganu
placed his head on Baba's Feet, out flowed streams of Ganga and Yamuna
water from both the toes of Baba. Seeing this sakshatkar, Das Ganu was
overwhelmed with feelings of love and adoration, and was full of tears.
He took the holy Tirth and sprayed over his head and hesitated to drink
inwardly due to his dilemma that Tirth is coming from a Moslem saint,
being a Brahmin, his mind is not matured enough to drink. Baba knew his
mind and his suspicious faith towards Him. Baba was evidently waiting
for development of the requisite faith and earnestness in Das Ganu. At
another occasion, Baba asked Das Ganu to do Naamasaptah. He replied that
he would do it, provided he was assured that, Vitthal would appear at
the end of the 7th day. Then Baba placing His hand on His chest assured
him that, certainly Vitthal would appear, but devotee must be earnest
and devout. Das Ganu read his saptha of Bhagavata, but failed to get
sakshatkar. Evidently Das Ganu waiting for Vitthal vision for long time,
one day he asked to Baba " Baba, you have been long putting off my
request. When will you give sakshatkar?" Baba replied, "You see Me, That
is sakshatkar. I am God". But Das Ganu was not satisfied with that
answer because of his faith towards Baba was not total. Until his
lifetime, Das Ganu did not get any chance and he considered that it was
not in his destiny (Prarabdha) to have a sakshatkar of God Vitthal
vision. Contrary to Gas Ganu's experience, with total faith on Baba,
Kaka Saheb Dixit saw Vitthal in a vision after the completion of Saptah.
Baba recognized Dixit's sincere devotion and earnestness and helped him
to have a darshan of Lord Vitthal.

Experiences of Devotees
Sai Sudha, Bloomington, IL
I am very happy and lucky to be a part of Chithra yatra. I am very happy
with the response from people I and around Blomington. Slowly, the host
homes are increasing in number. We have a group of Sai devotees here and
are planning for group bhajans. I have Baba at my place and experienced
few miracles of Baba. My cousin was suffering from brain tumor. My
brother in law lost his job due to layoffs in Switzerland. I prayed to
Baba and did Parayana for one week. Surprisingly, after two weeks, my
cousin was out of danger and my brother in law found a job in a good
company. I felt it is all because of the presence of Baba. I would like
to listen such miracles of Sairam from Baba's hosts and Baba's
volunteers. Baba helps all devotees in overcoming their problems. SaiRam
is the only God I/we have.
Vijayalakshmi
This time I have decided to stay in Shirdi for one month. On December
17th last year, I reached the Holy place, where our Sachidanadaprabhu
lived and blessed thousands of people. When I touched the land, my feet
felt great vibration. My heart filled with joy, because I am walking on
the soil, where Baba spend all his life time with great disciples like
Sri Mahlsapathy, Sri Bagoji, Sri Shyama, Sri Dasganu, Sri Tatya, Sri
Sadguru Upasani Maharaj, and Sri Bhate. After some time I remembered the
pain of my injured finger of my left foot, which I had while I was on
bus journey. A great surprise, the pain vanished, when my feet touched
the land. That is the love and parental affection of our Sadguru Sri
Sainath maharaj. Whenever I visit Shirdi, I stay at an old age home
about 10kms far away from main Mandir. Every day I used to walk to
mandir and Sri Sivanesan Swamy mandir. On the way the villagers, working
in the field, singing Marathi devotional songs offered me Jamaun fruits,
Onions, flowers and groundnuts with a smile. Some time I got a bicycle
lift to mandir. The Shirdi people are so affectionate. Surprisingly my
diabetic comes under control during this time. I remember Baba
words-"whoever is destined to be struck will be caressed."
CHAWADI FUNCTION; Every Thursday the devotees of Shirdi conduct the
colorful function, a musical procession Dwarakmai to Chawadi where Baba
used to sleep on Thursdays. They started this function on 10th December
1910 onwards. Baba led by Sri Tatya followed by Horse named Shyama,
followed by Sri Thulasi pot, musical band, and bajans of devotes. Now
the same tradition carried by Tatya's family members carrying Palanquin
with Baba photo. While visiting Shirdi one should not miss this
function.
SHRI RAMA NAVAMI FUNCTIION; It is very important function in Shirdi
celebrating from 1919. Late Gopal Rao Gund incited this function as
URUS, on Shri Rama Navami day. In Urus function, colorful flags and
sandal paste carried to the tombs of Muslim Fakirs. Both Muslims and
Hindus performing this function without any differences till today. His
mission's aim is religious harmony. Baba said," One God, one Universe,
one pure Sprit that is all the truth." Everywhere colorful Rangavallis
are painted, roads are cleaned, flags, musical bands, Nagarsankrithans,
bajans, Harikathas. Thousands of peoples reached Shirdi from the corners
of the country. Palanquins carried by hundreds of devotees walking on
the way to Shirdi from the remote villages, singing bajans, dancing in
groups, chanting Baba's name. It was like an ocean of devotes covered
entire Shirdi. All religious groups from the different corners of the
country participated with joy and great devotion. His invisible mission
supervised the function successfully. Baba is omniscient. In one contest
Baba said," My vigilant supervision is ever on those who love Me.
Whatever you may be, ever bear this in mind, that I am always with you,
wherever you are and at all times."
A Sai devotee
I would to like one incident that took place three weeks ago. I was in a
major accident. I hit a curb, the car went over the curb and just went
down the hill and bashed into the tree. My friend was sitting beside me
she was perfectly fine. I just had couple bruises and cuts and a black
eye. I got better within 5 days. Seriously all I was thinking at that
time that I was about to die because it seemed like the car was flying.
Baba saved my life, because if you believe in him with complete faith he
comes to help you no matter how bad the situation may be. It was a
miracle how Baba my life was saved in this major accident and I was fine
within few days, all my pains were gone within couple days.
Sunanda Degambod, Srilanka
This is about a newly wedded couple from Sri Lanka. They were coming
home, late in the night. The young couple had to get a second bus from
Colombo and was lucky to catch the last bus, almost in the midnight. The
couple could secure the rare-most seat. Soon a gang of youngsters
entered the bus and started making annoying remarks to the bride. Very
strange, an old, tall man in white got into the bus and sat in such a
way that the gang could not see the girl! However, their abusive shouts
continued. The bus came to a roundabout, and for no reason, members of
the gang started jumping out of the bus one by one. The whole saga was
over, and the "old tall man" who rescued the young couple also got down
at the next stop. The couple looked back through the rear window to
catch a glimpse of the Good Samaritan, but he had dissolved into thin
air.

We believe in Baba and what all we are today is only because of his
divine blessings. In many situations we have practically experienced his
miracles. I lost my project and I was not getting any opportunities for
couple of months. I started doing Parayanam and prayed that I will do it
regularly once in a month. I believe the very next week I got a project,
which I would be finishing this weekend. With his repeated blessings I
am very much confident that I will get back another project as and when
he wishes me to join and start working.

I had a wonderful experience today that confirms what Baba had said "I
am with you all the time" and I would love to share it with all Sai
Bandhus. I live in Los Angeles, CA and there is a trucking company here,
whose name is 'SAIA MOTORS'. (I don't know where it is or what they do).
They have trucks moving all around that have the words 'SAIA' written in
big letters on them and I love to see a truck whenever I am on the road.
I have to change a couple of freeways to go to work. Almost everyday I
see a truck with SAIA written on it when I am changing the freeway. So I
was thinking yesterday that I am so lucky, BABA is with me on all the
crossroads of my life, I am blessed to have his guidance. And today an
amazing thing happened that proved that what I thought yesterday was
wrong. As soon as I got on 105 I saw the SAIA truck. I usually go at
75mph, but today I decided to follow this truck and see my SAI in front
of me, so I slowed down and went at 60mph thru out. I thought how
wonderful, yesterday I was thinking that Baba is with me on all the
crossroads and HERE HE COMES to tell me that "I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS", not
just on the crossroads, I was so delighted when these thoughts crossed
my mind. I thank Baba for being there. I have full faith now that "GOD
LIVES IN ME AS ME" and that we should, RESPECT ourselves, and LOVE you
because this body is a temple of GOD.
I want to end with the icing on the cake, as I was departing from 'SAIA'
there came a car besides me, guess what the number plate said 'U AND
GOD'!
Vishaal
Dear Uday, I read your experience and something just prompted me to put
in my two bit. Your experience is definitely sad and painful to hear. I
am sure that you are going through a tough period in Life. But maybe
what pains you more, is the fact of comparing your previous position (of
wealth and success) to you present state. If you go one deliberating the
"Why" of Life, you will never move forward. We can only see what id just
ahead of us and not even around corners. I humbly think that this is
Baba's way of making you more detached to the worldly attachments. It is
said in the Isha Upanishad and reiterated in SSC that a sage stands
unruffled in state of happiness and sadness (in good and bad times).
Both are but a state of mind and one precedes the other. But this is
your test - of you having unquestionable, unshakeable Faith in your Guru
and having Patience to see you through the rough ride. Till today we
take Neem with Gud on occasions to remind us that there is Bitter with
the Sweet. I am sure that when the going was good, you were happy and
did not question that happiness, then why so for the downturn? Rest
assured that Baba is following each and every step of His devotee and
will pull you through the so-perceived rough weather unscathed. Have
FAITH & PATIENCE and unconditional surrender to your Guru and see the
Light unfold. You may get much more than just material wealth or after
this experience who knows, you may not desire wealth! Everything will be
all right as does always, by the grace of Baba.
Lakshmi
In our day-to-day life we go through different phases like tensions,
happiness, sorrow, worries. All these are connected to our previous
deeds and some are to test us to make us stronger. Real pain is when we
see someone who love suffers in the hands of fate. My brother is 28
years old and is struggling to find a job, not yet settled, confused
totally. All his friends got jobs and some are married. He acquired good
education but lacks confidence and doing some courses in software. He
spent lot of money toward these courses. Sai please be with him and
guide him. I am writing this letter with tears in my eyes, I called him
on phone and his voice was so depressed. Whenever I read Sai Vichaar my
faith in BABA increases and my own experience prove that Baba is with
me. Please listen to my prayer and help my brother in his career. Baba,
please help my brother.

you and have full faith in you. You alone can set things right. Please
give my husband a job. I will be ever grateful to you. Baba forgive us
if we have done any mistakes in the past. Please do not punish us now
for any of the sins we made. You alone can make things happen Baba. I
request all Sai devotees to kindly pray on our behalf.
A Sai devotee
Dearest Sairam, Baba you are always with me and had helped me to come
out of difficult times. I don't have words to talk about your miracles.
Thank you for all the things you have done in my life for the past year.
I feel I am doing mistakes without my knowlegde and thats the reason I
started having so many problems now. As you are aware, my marriage is
getting postponed for the past 1 year, my sister didn't get a good job,
so far none of the alliances matched to my sister, how ever hard I work
in my office I am not being recognized. I get depressed most of the
times. I cry almost every day, tell all my problems to you, Baba, please
give me patience and self confidence to over come all these problems and
give me peace of mind.

Question of the Week
Q. "How do you know Sai has accepted you and has forgiven you? How do I
pray to Him so that He listens to my prayers"?
A. by BL Venkatesh moorty
Salutations to the Lotus Feet of Sri Sainath. Chapter 11 of the Sri Sai
Satcharita says: There was no knowing when Baba would accept a devotee.
That depended on His sweet will. This is clearly illustrated by Haji
Siddique Phalke's story. Baba accepted him 9 long months after he first
arrived at Shirdi. When Shyama pleaded to Baba on Phalke's behalf, Baba
said, "If the Fakir(Allah) does not allow, what can I do ? Without His
grace, who will climb into this masjid?" However, Hemadpant has time and
again spelled out in the Satcharita the easy way of attaining Moksha,
viz. the constant company of great saints (Sadgurus) and remembering of
His glory and Name. (In Chapter 42, Baba Himself says: "He who loves Me
most, always sees Me. He ceaselessly meditates upon Me and always chants
My name. I feel indebted to him who surrenders himself COMPLETELY to Me
and ever remembers Me. I SHALL REPAY HIS DEBT BY GIVING HIM SALVATION
(SELF-REALIZATION). SO LEAVING OUT PRIDE AND EGOISM AND WITH NO TRACE OF
THEM, YOU SHOULD SURRENDER YOURSELF TO ME, WHO AM SEATED IN YOUR
HEART".)
Thus, it is clear that a devotee need not, in the least, worry as to
when Baba would accept him and hear his prayers, or forgive his wrong
deeds. As Baba Himself advises in Chapters 18 and 19, in His exhortation
to Smt.Radhabai Deshmukh (to give up her indefinite fast): "Have FIRM
FAITH (Shraddha) in your Guru. Practice Saburi (PATIENCE OR
PERSEVERENCE). It will ferry you across the sea of this mundane
existence. Saburi is manliness in man; it removes all sin and
afflictions, gets rid of calamities in various ways, and casts aside all
fear, and ultimately GIVES YOU SUCCESS. Saburi is the mine of virtues,
consort of good thoughts. NISHTHA (faith) and Saburi (patience) are like
twin sisters."
So, in my opinion, if a devotee has indeed surrendered his everything
(including his 6 internal weaknesses like desire, lust, anger etc) at
the Sadguru's Lotus Feet, he can rest assured that Baba will accept his
devotion sooner or later, and answer his prayers. And if he realizes his
wrong deeds and mistakes and GENUINELY BEGS PARDON to the Sadguru, He
will indeed pardon him, and not only that, show him the PATH OF
RIGHTEOUSNESS (The best course for us is to surrender our body, speech
and mind to Your Feet and always chant Your name for destroying our
sins: Satcharita Chapter 46). All this is easier said than done. So
devotees must, as said earlier, constantly remember His names and read
about or hear His leelas, so that the mind is always occupied with good
thoughts. As Hemadpant concludes in Chapters 18&19: "Those who lovingly
sing Baba's fame and those who hear the same with devotion, both become
one with Sai". To the second part of the question as to "HOW TO PRAY TO
SAI SO THAT HE LISTENS TO HIS PRAYERS", I again quote from Chapter 11 of
the Satcharitha: He was a stream of affection and motherly love. He
called out His devotees and said," Was I angry with you? If a mother
kicked her children and if the sea turned back the rivers, I would
neglect your welfare. I am your slave and shall always stand by you,
whenever you call upon Me, and I always long for your love". So, as said
in Chapter 10, "Give your mind to Sai and His stories, and then He is
sure to bless you. That is the easiest path." Jai Sai Ram.
A. by Shyamala Hari
One of the Namas in Sai Ashtotram is Jagatpita which means Sai is the
Father of the world. Lord Venkateswara is addressed as Jagatkutumbi
meaning that the whole world is His family. In a verse in the Phala
Shruti of Vishnu-sahasranama, Krishna tells Arjuna that one may want to
recite all the 1000 Vishnunamas to praise Him but He is pleased even
with a single verse and does not require that a devotee should read all
the 1000 names. In Gita Krishna also said, He is very pleased when a
devotee offers Him even a leaf or a flower or even water. So, He is only
too ready to accept us. What is offered does not have to be a luxurious
object. All that it takes to please Him is a sincere and pure heart full
of devotion and love for Him. There is never a question of His not
listening to our prayers or not accepting us. Often, if we have offered
prayers asking Baba to fulfil a desire of ours and it turns out that the
desire is not fulfilled, then we think that He has not accepted our
prayers. This is due to lack of complete trust in Him. If we believe in
Him completely and surrender to His will completely, then we will accept
whatever happens in our lives as having been ordained by Him because He
thought that it is good for us. In the Sapatnekar's story, Sapatnekar
was heart broken by the loss of his son and approached Baba for relief
but Baba yelled at him with a "Get away". This response from Baba went
on for about a year. So, for some time, it did seem like he was rejected
by Baba. Meanwhile Sapatnekar's wife served Baba with selfless and pure
devotion. Pleased by her devotion, Baba forgave Sapatnekar and explained
to him why He had been angry with him earlier and blessed Sapatnekars
with a child. Baba was angry with Sapatnekar because he was inwardly
blaming Baba for the death of his son. The point to note here is that
Baba forgave Sapatnekar because of his wife's devotion and sincerity and
because of Sapatnekar's perseverance in seeking Baba's acceptance
although he did not even realize what he did wrong. So, Sai is ready to
forgive us and accept us. All that we need to do is not to give Him up
under any circumstances.
Regarding how to pray so that He listens to our prayers, the two well
known stories of Gajendra and Draupadi tell us how to do this. In the
Gajendra Moksham story, the elephant was fighting for life, with the
crocodile. As long as the elephant was struggling on his own, Vishnu did
not come to his rescue. When the elephant had no strength left for any
further struggle, he screamed to Vishnu, saying you and You alone can
save me, there is nothing I can do. Then Vishnu rushed with His
Sudarshan and saved the elephant. Similarly, in the Draupadi story,
Draupadi was clinging to her sari with one hand while Dusshasana was
pulling it away from her body. She lifted the other hand towards Krishna
and praying to Him to rescue her. She was not rescued as long as she was
trying to protect herself with one hand. Finally, in complete surrender
and forgetting about protecting herself, she lifted both arms towards
the lord. Immediately, the saries covering her became infinitely many.
Sakuni's hands were tired but he could not remove them all. Thus the
moral of these stories is that a prayer with complete surrender of ego
is what God responds to. It is not that He has not been hearing us until
then because He witnesses everything all the time. But He involves
Himself and takes our burdens on Himself only when He sees complete
surrender on our part.
