From the Editor's Keyboard...

Sai Vichaar thanks you for your support for the Question of the Week feature. This feature is intended to initiate useful discussion on topics related to Sai philosophy, His message, and Sai devotion. Please send your suggested topics for the same. We also hope to see more use for the Sai activities section. This is a good opportunity to spread the word about various activities, celebrations, and festivities of Sai centers across the world. Postings on Sai activities are very useful for new visitors and for those who would like to know more about Sai activities in their area.

The "Question of the week" for the week is,

Besides highlighting the ever-knowing nature of Baba, does the episode of two lizards in Chapter 15 of Sai Satcharitha signify anything else?

Humbly Yours,

The Editor

Feature of the week: Love and Demands

"Yo NaHrishyathi NaDveshti NaSochathi NaKaankshathiSubhaaSubha Parithyaagi Bhakthimaan Yasyame Priya"- BhagavadGeetha

"The one who does not rejoice, neither does hate.. The one that is neither saddens nor aspires; the one that renounces the good and the bad... is the one that is dear to me"

Geetha says that Lord loves those who neither rejoice at the good bestowed on them nor develop hatred towards ill mongers; those who are neither saddened by losses nor ecstatic from gains; those who are ready to give up both good and bad. How does one accomplish this? Why does one should accomplish this? Is this a demand from God?

Lord Sainath demands both faith and patience from His children. If God is considered as the repository of perennial wisdom meant for the betterment of mankind, the analogy of God's commands and its stringent demands takes up a different meaning. Sai is the "kamadhenu" the ever yielding cow, and the "kalpavriskha" the celestial tree that bestows all riches upon the faithful. This Saint God's demands are not a set of stringent commands but the loving guidance for a truthful seeker. Sometimes they are the bitter pills lovingly given by the mother necessary for the infant's perpetual health. How does one explain this love of God? God's love is selfless and unconditional. This is realized only by the devotees' selfless and unconditional love towards God. Hence, the best mundane example useful to compare God's love is the love between mother and infant, which is selfless, unconditional and undemanding.

Contributed Article:Protecting the Blacksmith's Child

Once in the year 1910, on the day before Diwali, Baba was sitting by the holy fireplace (dhuni) and thrusting the firewood into it, and the dhuni was burning bright, with rising flames. Suddenly, instead of pushing in firewood, Baba thrust his hand fully into the dhuni, and consequently suffered burns up till his arm. Noticing this, Madhavarao Deshpande (affectionately addressed by fellow devotees in Shirdi as Shama) grabbed Baba by the waist from behind, dragged him forcibly backwards, and asked, "Deva, why have you done this?" Then Baba came to his senses and replied, " The wife of a blacksmith at a distant place was working the bellows near a furnace. When her husband called her, she got up in a hurry, and her little child, whom she was holding at her waist, fell into the furnace. Seeing that, I immediately thrust my hand into the furnace, pulled the child out of the fire, and saved it. I do not mind my arm being burnt, but I am glad I saved the child."

"To render instant help, Baba rushes to His devotees, unmindful of his personal hardship."

Experiences of Devotees

Dharmender R, Florida, USA

I have a 4-year-old son who is very fond of Baba. I recently showed him the web site of Shirdi Sai temple in Florida and he watches the multimedia presentation of the temple on the site with great devotion. The incident I narrate here happened about three weeks back. I took my son to my office late in the evening as I had some unfinished business to take care of. He asked me to show him the web site of the temple in Florida and I opened the web site and after leaving the computer to his disposal, got busy in my work. I turned my attention to him after twenty minutes and the first thing I saw was an open Excel worksheet with the following message "We are building a new temple in Inverness, and we need your help!"

My first reaction after reading this message was that this is a direct message from Baba and I had reason to believe that. Just a few days ago, I had started reading Sri Guru charitra online on this web site and had recently seen the request for donations for the construction of the Temple. I had thought about donating the money but did not pursue it further. Baba, in his own mysterious ways reminded me of my thoughts and I realized that I should not delay it any further and made a humble contribution immediately. It needs to be noted that my son doesn't know how to operate a computer and generally jumbles every icon on the desktop whenever he gets a chance to operate the machine. How he reached to that particular web page and copied that message, opened an excel spread sheet and pasted it neatly in the very first column with nothing else on it is a mystery to me or may be it is one of HIS inscrutable ways of getting things accomplished at the right time. I just pray that he keeps my family under his wings and helps us make the right choices in life.

I would like to ask the following question in your forum. In Sai Satcharitha Baba mentions that the lizard was overjoyed as her sister is coming from Aurangabad, in response to a devotee's question about the significance of the lizard tick-ticking? Besides highlighting the ever-knowing nature of Baba, does this story signify something else?

Sai devotee
Please accept my most humblest shashtang pranam. Thank you for all your blessings that you have bestowed upon me and my family.

Sai devotee
Dear sai devotees, warm wishes to everyone for a wonderful, prosperous, healthy and a spiritual new year. May Baba guide us always and avoid bad thoughts and greed. I love you SAI and without you I would have totally been lost and would have given up. Sometimes I feel really sad and depressed and cannot find a reason, I sit in front of BABA and just look at him, and HE says you have no reason to worry or be upset about. Just have faith in me AND CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE IN LIFE, BE OPTIMISTIC. This really helps me a lot. I would like to wish my husband and my son, parents in India, my in laws, my sister in law's family, my sister's family and all our relatives that everyone has a year guided by SAI.

Prayer Club

Dev
I see lots of request in the Saibaba mail every Thursday. Most of the time it is money, jobs, marriage, and so on. But money does not bring happiness. All people cannot handle money. Twenty years ago, I was rather poor and we were a happy couple. We enjoyed talking and working together. Now I am rather ok and financially sound. My wife wants to do everything and she has forgotten the old days. I am now being abused along with my kids. She has gone even to the extent that she wants to runaway with white old man who can give her more. It's rather strange to me. I don't understand how people can become callous and indifferent to her own blood. She does not want to save any money for kids, their education and marriage. I am now 50 and will retire in a couple of years and living a very painful mental life. I have prayed to Sai, but quarrels don't stop. Sometime it's with me, other times it is with my son and daughter. Exchanges of abuse and getting physical are common. I don't know what to do. Because of kids, I tolerate all nonsense. She is now 43. Last week we were to go on a holiday trip. In the morning, she beat my son for not washing his brief. The poor child wept helplessly and I could not do anything. What is wrong with my karma! Maybe your prayers will work and maybe some devotee can give me some guidance. Very soon, I want to end my grahasthashram. O' lord save my kids from the danger.

Bala
I like to first thank the devotees who have created this website for the welfare of the needy. How do we know that we are needy in terms of our prayers, if answered by the almighty lord Sai Baba. I am going through one of the most difficult period in my life and to any sai devotee I speak, they say pray to Swami. I am praying to Swami but one way or the other, I have a next challenge. On each step I have to pull a thorn to give me way. Please for God's sake, Sai devotees help me.

Rita
Sai devotees I urgently need your prayers to help my father safely pull through the critical condition he is now in at Kailash hospital Noida. Please pray to our Sai to Take care of him, save him and be with him .He is also a Sai devotee. Thank you

A devotee

Mukhta
Om Sai ram please shower your blessings on my brother in law and his family. Let him get an interview and be selected for the job he has applied. Baba this is the best chance for him to improve his career and support his family too. Baba take care of him and his family.

Malati Desai
Sairam to all, Baba, as a widow at 61 years, I am trying to do my best. My two little grand kids my son and his wife, we stay together. For last 3 years Baba I m facing many problems in our life. You know my situation. Without you, we don't have anybody to help us. Help us by prayer for my son. He is good to all and that's why he has to suffer more in life. Take our all ahankar. Help me to be quite with patience.

Curie Kannaiyan
Baba please help Deepu to get a job .I strongly believe only with your grace he can be settled in life. He is suffering a lot financially and there is no one to help. He is searching for job for the past one year. However, he did few interviews, which were encouraging, but nothing came to be fruitful. He is frustrated and started hating life itself. This attitude of him makes me so scary. He needs s to take care of so many family responsibilities but is helpless not even having money for his survival. Baba this is the third time I am writing to you through this website. Please help him get a job at least by this month. I don't know what he will do otherwise to survive. Readers please pray Deepu to get a job .I know your prayers can save a life.

Usha
Baba, you have been helping me, my family always. My older sister is having health problems and problems with her son. The son is not responsible and not co-operative. Please change him, so that my sister and brother-in-law live in peace. Baba please also take care of my other two older sisters, they do not have family and are alone. Sai mahadeva you are my everything and I will spend rest of my life at your feet.

Quotation of the Week
"Sadguru looks first to the qualifications of his disciples; and then gives them suitable instructions, without unsettling their minds in the least, and leads them on towards the goal of self-realization. In this respect, some say that what the Sadguru teaches or instructs, should not be divulged to others. They think that their instructions become useless, if they are published. This view is not correct. The Sadguru is like a monsoon cloud. He pours down profusely, i.e., scatters widely his nectar-like teachings. These, we should enjoy and assimilate to our heart's content; and then serve others with them, without any reserve" - Shri Sai Satcharitha

Question of the Week

Q. Is it advisable to share one's personal experiences with Sadguru with others?

A. by Raveendra Reddy Kona
I think the answer to your question is that a good sadhak should never feel proud of his experience with the Guru (or God). This pride is not at all healthy as it may spoil your perception towards God. You should suppress this pride and see the almighty as everything to you. There is no harm in sharing your experiences that you have with Baba, in fact that helps others also to have faith and help themselves to lead a meaningful and happy life. This is how I feel and what my opinion is about your statement.
